Susan’s first memories of making art were at her grandmother’s round oak table, with lots of blank paper and a fresh box of crayons at her Iowa farm.  Having had some training along the way, she describes herself as “mostly self-taught” in Pastel her favorite medium as well as oil, colored pencil and watercolor. She has taken workshops with Tina Moore, Bob Gerbracht, Gill Dillinger, Richard McKinley, Kim Lordier and Margot Schulzke. She also attended demos at the International Association of Pastel Societies. They include Lorenzo Chavez, Albert Handell, Jeanne Rosier Smith, Cuong Nguyen.

Susan has spent the last 38 years in California. Twenty years were spent in production weaving and teaching. After retiring she returned to painting full time.

“Why do I decide to paint this scene? It is always the light. Doing sketches, notans to finalize the composition. Drawing the final version of the painting and transferring it to the archival sanded paper. Selecting the colors with values in mind and putting them aside, so I don’t have to try and find them and lose my train of thought. I have collected more than 2000 pastels and several hundred of pastel pencils.

“I have been inspired by the beauty of the High Sierras where we live during the summer months of the year. We travel throughout the United States taking photographs along the way which gives me a huge selection to paint from in my studio.”

Susan has pastels and watercolors in many private collections. She is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, Blue Line Arts, Placer Arts, North Tahoe Arts, American Women Artists- associate with distinction,  International Guild of Realism, member of California Art Club, Portrait Society of America, and Pastel Society of America.
